The Race
Opening // The opening segment would be 10 + seconds with quick cuts of establishing shots for Japan and the bike race, all in black and white.
Arrival + Prep // The scenes move into story mode with longer shots of traveling/arrival, probably a train ride, lugging and building bikes. Voiceover will start to talk about Nicholas’ personal relationship and history with racing, maybe some flashbacks of old photos/video.
Race Time // Footage will shift to getting race ready, start line nerves and then finally the racing itself. Long, dramatic slow motion shots, mixed with fast charging cuts. The voiceover will talk about how racing mimics life, drives innovation, and is an important part of cycling culture and history.
Finish Line // Showing the finish line expressions, the grit in the teeth, the relief, the sweat, the exhaustion, the joy . . . and the podium of course. The voiceover rises and waxes poetically about triumph and pain.
Music + Sound // Cinematic music will simmer under the voiceover and rise with the some of the slow motion shots. Race noises, cheers, grinding gears and heavy breathing will punctuate with the fast shots.
Style + Examples: This segment will be high contrast black and white, with varying degrees of 8mm film treatment and vignetting. The shooting and editing might fall between the shakey real time vibe of this Red Hook Crit video and landscapes and quick cuts of this Monster Energy bmx video.
The Twist
After we close out the race day, a black screen and quite moment . . . then ambient noises and black and white scenic footage slowly starts to fade in. The voiceover starts again with something like “ . . . but competition isn’t everything . . .”. The images start becoming saturated with color, the cuts become quicker and the ambient noise builds with music, leading us into the bikepacking trip.
Unrestricted
Setup // Show the bikes getting set up with bags and packing the camping gear. Introduce a local rider that is joining Nicholas. The voiceover talks about how they repurpose the same bikes to do an entirely different thing, where “slow” is actually the goal.
Curiosity // Focus footage on distinctly Japanese sights, finding out of the way places, trying new food, talking with people along the way, etc. Voiceover talks about how you can discover more when traveling this way, more intwined with the surroundings and seeing beautiful things that are overlooked from a train or car window.
Sidetracking // Build in at least two activities that aren’t bike related . . . like surfing or paragliding, etc.
Vulnerability // A segment about inclement weather, bad drivers, uncomfortable lodging, roadkill, and anything that isn’t quite perfect or doesn’t go to plan.
Warm & Fuzzy // Wrap up the edit with a voiceover that extols the virtues of the bike, not just as a vector of competition, but a unique and special tool for adventure that is unparalleled in the history of mankind (simple, sustainable, affordable, etc.)
Music + Sound // Joyous, uplifting music underlying most of the footage and voiceover, punctuated by real life dialogue and ambient sounds from the footage.
Style + Example // A lot of the footage will be handheld, with some drone (if allowed) and tripod shots as breaks between the narrative clips. The treatment will be full color, with a warmer tone, more highlights and a slight expired film look/grain. The editing and treatment style of Riding the Long White Cloud is a good example.
